Vung Tau is a popular weekend destination for people in Ho Chi Minh City, which Wikivoyage puts about 125 km away, and its beachfront apartment blocks make aparthotels and serviced apartments a practical choice. A kitchen, a living area and space for the whole family help on a trip of several days, and longer-stay guests such as oil and gas professionals will find the same layout useful, since Wikivoyage describes the city as a major centre of Vietnam's offshore oil industry.

Front Beach (Bai Truoc) is a compact beach in a small bay at the southern tip of the peninsula. Wikivoyage says it sits close to the tourist centre and that Front Beach Park is where many people watch the sunset. It lists Ba Cu street as the city's centre and Do Chieu street as its food centre, and Vietnam Online says the beach is quieter than Back Beach.

Back Beach (Bai Sau) has long stretches of sand on the eastern side of the city, and Vietnam Online calls it a lively hub with hotels, restaurants, bars and beach activities. Wikivoyage says motorbike rental is especially easy to find here and that the best cycling route follows the coast along Thuy Van street.

Bai Dau, also called Mulberry Beach, is a small beach on the west side of Big Mountain according to Wikivoyage. Big Mountain has a hiking trail with pagodas and a Zen monastery. Staying here puts you away from the main beach strips, so you will want a ride-hailing app or your own transport to reach the centre.

From Ho Chi Minh City there are three practical routes. The first is the hydrofoil: Wikivoyage says the ferries leave from Bach Dang Pier in District 1 and land at Cau Da port on Ha Long Street, and the operator Greenlines lists a Saigon to Vung Tau service of 120 minutes. The second is the bus, with services at least hourly during the day from the Ho Chi Minh City bus stations taking around two hours according to Wikivoyage. The third is a car or taxi via the HCMC to Long Thanh to Dau Giay expressway and Highway 51, which Wikivoyage says takes roughly two hours from District 1 and is busier at weekends and public holidays.
Once in Vung Tau, Wikivoyage describes much of the city as flat and rather small. It recommends walking around Ba Cu street, Do Chieu street and the Front Beach park, and says taxis and xe om motorbike taxis are plentiful, with Grab easiest for visitors. The best cycling route follows the coast along Thuy Van, Ha Long, Quang Trung and Tran Phu streets. Bicycle rental is not abundant but can be found in some hostels at Back Beach.
Vung Tau has a settled expatriate and professional community, and Wikivoyage describes Japanese, Korean and Russian shops and eateries in the downtown area and says the expatriate community has brought Italian, Mexican, American and Indian influences. That makes the Front Beach area, close to the centre, the most convenient base for everyday shopping and eating. Back Beach is more oriented towards beach holidays.
Because the city is only about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City by road or hydrofoil, it also works as a base for people who work in the larger city on some days. See our Ho Chi Minh City page and the relocation guide, or browse the wider Vietnam listings.
Wikivoyage describes a savanna climate with two seasons: a dry season from November to April, which it calls ideal for hiking and which includes the Tet holiday period, and a rainy season from May to October with rain usually falling in the afternoon and very hot, humid days. It suggests the rainy season is good for the beach.
Vietnam Online advises that weekdays are calmer than weekends, with Sunday afternoons attracting thousands of visitors, so a midweek stay will usually feel more relaxed on the beaches and roads.
The city sits on a peninsula, with Front Beach in a small bay at the southern tip and the long Back Beach on the eastern side. Since June 2025 Vung Tau has been a ward of Ho Chi Minh City following the national administrative reorganisation, according to Wikipedia, though most visitors still think of it as a separate seaside destination.
