Phan Thiet is a fishing port and fish-sauce town on Vietnam's south-east coast, and the gateway to the long resort coast that most visitors know as Mui Ne. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Phan Thiet suit the kitesurfers who come for a whole wind season, families who want a kitchen near the beach, and anyone who prefers a city base with markets and supermarkets to a resort-only stay.

The city centre has the central market, known for fresh seafood, along with large supermarkets, museums and the school where Ho Chi Minh briefly taught. Resorts are thinner on the ground here than in many Vietnamese beach cities, so daily life feels more like a working town, and the bus station and buses to Mui Ne are close at hand.
This hilly stretch of coast east of the centre has small beaches and coves, with many resorts built on the slopes above the water. Ba Nai Hill is crowned by the Po Sah Inu Cham towers, built in the 8th century, and the Sea Links complex here includes a golf course.
The main resort strip runs for around 10 km along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, lined with resorts, restaurants, bars, spas and travel agencies. Even-numbered addresses are on the sea side and odd numbers inland; sand shifts with the seasons, so some stretches have only a sea wall at high tide.
Stays in or near Ham Tien (Rang Beach)
At the north-east end of the bay, the fishing town of Mui Ne has a busy harbour full of coloured boats in the dry season and a local market where residents gather in the evenings. The Fairy Stream and the Red Sand Dunes are close by, and smaller guesthouses and resorts continue along the road east to Ganh Beach.
There is no commercial airport in the area yet, so most visitors fly into Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat) or Cam Ranh for Nha Trang and continue by road or rail. A daily train runs from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet station, about 2.5 km from the centre, taking around five hours, while trains on the main north–south line stop at Binh Thuan (Muong Man) station about 12 km out. Open-tour buses run from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat and Nha Trang directly to the Ham Tien and Mui Ne strip.
Local buses 1 and 9 run between Phan Thiet and Mui Ne along the coast road roughly every 20–30 minutes from early morning to early evening. Taxis, motorbike taxis and Grab are all available, and bicycles and motorbikes can be hired from many hotels and agencies, though traffic on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street needs care.
For groceries, the city centre has Lotte Mart, Co.opmart and Bach Hoa Xanh supermarkets plus the central and western markets, and there are WinMart stores on the resort strip. ATMs are plentiful along the strip. If a sandy beach matters, check the current state of the beach in front of your building before booking a long stay, especially after the storm season, as erosion has left some stretches without sand.
Kitesurfing schools along the beach offer equipment storage for regular riders, which helps on a season-long stay. If you are comparing options for a longer trip, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out the trade-offs.
Phan Thiet has a relatively dry tropical savanna climate. The wet season runs from about May to mid-November but brings less rain than most of Vietnam, and the national tourism authority recommends November to April as the best time to visit. From November to March strong thermal winds blow most afternoons, the peak season for kitesurfing and windsurfing; swimming is calmest in the early morning before the wind and waves pick up.
The local Cham community gathers at the Po Sah Inu towers for the annual Kate festival. Mui Ne's fishing fleet moors in the harbour in the dry season and moves to the other side of the cape during the monsoon, from May to October.
The former capital of Binh Thuan province became part of Lam Dong province in the 2025 administrative reorganisation. The city centre sits on the coast to the west, and the resort areas of Phu Hai, Ham Tien and Mui Ne run east along the bay. Ho Chi Minh City is about 200 km away, and Da Lat and Nha Trang are reachable by bus.

Yes. Mui Ne, Ham Tien and Phu Hai lie on the coast east of the city centre and were wards of Phan Thiet city before the 2025 reorganisation. The name Mui Ne is often used loosely for the whole resort coast.
Take the daily train to Phan Thiet station, which takes about five hours, or an open-tour or regular bus. There is no commercial airport in the area yet, so flights land in Ho Chi Minh City or Cam Ranh.
