Coolum Beach is a surf town on the northern Sunshine Coast of Queensland, on the Sunshine Coast, which lies about 100 km north of central Brisbane, and south of Noosa. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Coolum Beach suit the pace of the place: families who want a kitchen and laundry within reach of a patrolled beach, couples staying a week or more, and golfers or walkers who plan their days around the coast and the mountain rather than a city itinerary.

The town centre sits behind the main beach, close to the surf club, whose lifesavers have been patrolling the water since 1919. Cafés, bakeries and family restaurants line the beachfront, and the Coolum Boardwalk follows the coast to Point Perry, the rocky headland that marks the southern boundary of Coolum Beach. It is the easiest base for a stay without a car.

Peregian Beach is a small coastal town of about 5,000 residents just north of Coolum, with continuous residential development along the sandy coastal strip and Noosa National Park behind it. The David Low Way passes through the town from north to south.
Yaroomba is a coastal suburb south of the town with a long sandy beach, a golf course that occupies about half of the suburb and the rest given over to housing. Its name is a Kabi word meaning surf on the beach. Heading south from Coolum surf club, the coast leads towards Point Arkwright.
Marcoola has a long sandy beach on the Coral Sea, and Sunshine Coast Airport is in the south of the locality, which makes it the shortest transfer on this coast. Part of Mount Coolum National Park lies within its bounds, and the Sunshine Motorway runs through its western side.
Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is in Marcoola, about 10 km north of Maroochydore and around 90 km north of the centre of Brisbane. It has direct flights to Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and several Queensland destinations, and it is the only jet-capable airport serving the urban area. Brisbane Airport, about 100 km south, also serves the region.
TransLink route 620 runs between Maroochydore and Noosa Heads via Peregian Beach, using the David Low Way along the coast. Away from the main road, a car makes the surrounding beaches, golf courses and inland attractions much easier to reach. The nearest railway station is at Yandina, on the line to Brisbane, rather than in Coolum itself.
Coolum has the basics of everyday life within the town: a public library on Park Street, primary and secondary schools, and the beachfront cafés that locals use daily. Stays of a week or more fit the area well, with a kitchen letting you shop for yourself and eat in between the cafés and restaurants.
The daily routine tends to revolve around the coast. Walkers have the rockpools, bays and boardwalks to headlands, golfers have several courses nearby, and surf lessons are available from a local school. If you are weighing options, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels explains what the apartment format adds, and what an aparthotel is covers the basics.
The Sunshine Coast has a humid subtropical climate, with warm summers and mild winters. There is no dry season and rainfall is generally high. Sea temperatures at nearby Mooloolaba and Noosa Heads range from about 21°C in August to about 27°C in February.
Summer suits swimming, while the cooler months are more comfortable for climbing Mount Coolum or walking the coast. The summit track is steep, rough and dangerously slippery when wet, so the walk is best left for dry days. Allow at least two hours for the full experience, and note that the hill is about 208 m high.
The town has a small centre by the beach, with the volcanic dome of Mount Coolum on its southern side and a string of quieter beach suburbs on either hand. Most visitors choose between the town itself, the beaches to the north and south, and the area near the airport. For the neighbouring resort towns, see Noosa Heads and Maroochydore.
